About

Stev Cintury portrait

Grew up in a large, loud, music-everywhere household — my father a pianist and choral director filled the house with sound.

I had a lot of fun studying piano and french horn at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School (78–81), then chased the visual side at Box Hill TAFE Art & Design (82).

Qualified as a hairdresser in 85 and worked in a bunch of cool salons while keeping the music going.

The first salon I worked in was owned by an exceptional guitarist, Adrian Costello and we went on to create and perform a lot of music together over the next 20+ years. We still catch up today and Ade will be spanking the plank on some upcoming releases.

Spent the mid-late 80s on keys in a great original band Pure Instinct (85–89), with a group of awesome musicians and writers including Glenn Sutherland (vox/ax), Drew Hacker (vox/bass), Jeff Findlay (drums). Superb songs and lots of fun on the road.

Then years of solo gigs, duos and rotating line-ups through the early 90s. In 95 my neighbor, Brian "Jagger" Lang, another excellent guitarist introduced me to the internet and it looked like a great way to get my music to the world.

Little did I know a new career path — web development would take over, and from 2000 the songwriting went into a drawer. Although not for long.

Tesla's Invention band

In 05–06 I formed the Tesla's Invention band — the last sustained burst of writing and performing before the day job swallowed everything.

That band was also heaps of fun with Adrian Costello on ax, Julian Wawruszak on bass and Evan Read on drums.

Our thoughts, love and prayers go out to Evan who is currently battling cancer. Keep fighting champ!! We're all there with you.

Founded TouchPoint Video in 2019, the interactive-video work that pays the rent. And now, twenty years on, the songs from those decades that traverse a bunch of genres are finally seeing the light. And they sound awesome!!

Better late than never.

How AI was used

When I heard you could upload a recording and AI could reimagine it I was intrigued. After all, I had 50+ recordings spanning 30 years of writing to work with.

Most recordings were very domestic — a 4-track reel to reel, bouncing VCR tapes, later a sampler, occasionally a studio.

I loved all the tunes like a parent loves a child, but none of the recordings quite cut the mustard.

After uploading a few recordings to Suno and tweaking the prompts, I was blown away to be honest. I uploaded some vocal recordings so it used my voice, and it did a pretty good job.

Here's a comparison for you to judge for yourself.

Ebony · 1997

Original recording

1997 · reel to reel

Voice and guitars recorded on 4-track quarter-inch reel to reel. All human.

Same song, rebuilt with Suno using my vocal stems. Future tunes will be a mix.
